Blue Honey: What It Is, How to Make It, and Why It’s the Best Way to Take Magic Mushrooms
You’ll make your local bees jealous with this easy DIY psychedelic blue honey recipe.
There are two main benefits of turning your magic mushrooms into blue honey — firstly, it’s delicious; secondly, honey is an excellent preservative, ensuring your mushies maintain their potency for years.
In this guide, we’ll explain what blue honey is, how to make it, and it works to preserve your precious psilocybin for when you need it.
What Is Blue Honey?
Blue honey is a simple mixture of honey and magic mushrooms. Honey is a natural preservative and sweetener, which makes it a great medium for storing psychedelic mushrooms.
Honey has the unique quality of acting as a solvent. When you grind up dried magic mushrooms (never fresh!) and store them in honey, the active ingredients will gradually diffuse into the honey itself. This works just like a tincture or oil, but with honey as the solvent.
As the psilocybin diffuses into the honey, it sometimes takes on a slight blue hue around the edges — especially around the top, where it’s exposed to oxygen. This same effect happens in the mushrooms themselves — forming a blueish bruising when the mushroom is damaged.
Why Is Blue Honey So Popular?
There are a few reasons that blue honey has become a popular way to store and consume magic mushrooms. We’ll discuss the specific benefits below.
It’s Delicious
The taste of magic mushrooms isn’t great, so most people try and mask it using a pizza or other food. But this doesn’t work that well because you can’t actually cook the mushrooms, or you’ll destroy the psilocybin. You need to add them afterward. Have you ever had a pizza with dry, crunchy mushrooms? It’s not as good as it sounds.
The better method for masking the flavor is to either convert your shrooms into honey or make mushroom chocolates.
Honey is a great medium because its intense sweetness masks virtually all traces of the magic mushroom flavor. You can also mix it into warm drinks like tea, coffee, or some hot water and lemon. You can also spread it over some toast or waffles.

It Prolongs Storage Life
Storing psilocybin mushrooms can be a challenge if you’re looking to retain the original potency and maximize your trip intensity. You can buy shrooms in small quantities to avoid having to store them, but you’ll end up paying more and might not have stock when you plan on tripping. Many people choose to order in bulk to save money and put the rest in the freezer for long-term storage.
But even the freezer doesn’t hold a candle to the potential shelf life you can get from blue honey. Honey is a special preservative. There are tombs in Egypt that have been found to have edible honey inside.
Honey not only resists contamination, it actively protects the psilocybin from degradation. You can leave blue honey unrefrigerated for many months and possibly even years without worrying too much about a loss of potency. Just be sure to keep it in a cool, dark place, and you should have no issues.
Many people who grow magic mushrooms will want to employ this method to preserve some of their stock to look back on in the future.
You Avoid the Dreaded ‘Gut Rot’
Most importantly, for most people, blue honey is an easy way to consume psilocybin. For most magic mushroom users, eating dried psilocybin mushrooms is a highly unpleasant experience that can, in worst-case scenarios, lead to a syndrome called “gut rot,” which is characterized by stomach pain, a sense of heaviness, and nausea.
Some of the main recommendations for avoiding this effect are to drink mushroom tea or make mushroom honey. These methods work because the leading cause of gut rot is the fibrous nature of the mushrooms, in combination with the serotonergic effects. Remove the fibers, and you stand a far less likely chance of experiencing gut rot.
How To Make Blue Honey: Step-By-Step
Making blue honey is a simple process that anyone can do without specialized equipment or experience.
All you need is a jar, some liquid honey (the thinner, the better), and dried magic mushrooms. A grinder is nice to have but not required.
Step 1: Cut or Grind Your Mushrooms
For the best results, you’ll want to get your pieces of magic mushrooms as small as possible before mixing them into your honey. You can use a knife to cut the shrooms into tiny pieces or grind them into a fine powder using your coffee or spice grinder.
Step 2: Plan Your Proportions
If you don’t care about precision, you can toss some shrooms in a jar and fill it up with honey. This will undoubtedly work, but the potency will be a total mystery, so be cautious when using it for the first time.
If you prefer to be more meticulous and planned, you can estimate the potency of your honey, but you’ll need to measure both the shrooms and the honey before you start.
1:16 Potency (Works For Most Honey)
So if you have a standard pint mason jar (16 oz), you can add roughly 30 grams of shrooms and around 400 mL of liquid to make a 1:16 honey. This is a good starting point. This dose works out to about 1 gram equivalent per ~3 teaspoons (16 mL). Your dosage may vary, so it’s still important to test a small amount first.
1:10 Potency (Stronger, But Requires Thinner Honey)
If you have very thin honey, you might be able to go even stronger with about 40 grams of dried, powdered shrooms in 400 mL of honey.
This would make a 1:10 honey with a 1 gram equivalent of 2 teaspoons (10 mL).
The problem with this potency is that most honey will be far too thick to effectively strain the mushrooms. If you don’t mind the dried shrooms, you can simply leave it in the honey and eat it as-is.
Just make sure to stir it up as much as possible before you take it! The mushroom powder will tend to settle at the bottom of the jar.
Step 3: Add Your Shrooms to Your Jar
Once you’ve planned your proportions, add the cut-up shrooms or powdered shrooms to your mason jar.
Pour the honey over the jar. Make sure the honey completely covers your mushrooms by at least ~1 cm (~¼ inch).
Use a spoon to mix the honey and shrooms together.
Step 4: Wait… Like 2 Weeks
Seal your jar and place it in a cool, dark area. You’ll want to give the honey at least 2 weeks for the psilocybin to infuse into the honey, but longer is better.
If you’re not in a rush, you can leave the shrooms in there indefinitely if you want and only strain when it comes time to use it. Just make sure there are no mushrooms poking out over the honey or they could rot. Everything needs to be completely covered by the honey.
If you’re in a rush, you can gently double-boil the honey for about 2 hours and strain — you should get nearly the same potency using this method as about two weeks of waiting.
Just be careful! Too much heat will destroy the psilocybin — use gentle heat only.
Step 5: Strain… or Not
When you’re ready to use your mushrooms, you just need to strain the mushroom bits out of your honey. You could use a simple strainer for this if you used cut-up pieces of shrooms or a cheesecloth if you used a more fine grind.
If the honey is too thick to strain, you can gently warm it up by soaking the jar in some hot water for a few minutes (keep the water level below the top of the jar lid so water doesn’t get inside).
Once the honey is warmed up it will become nice and runny. This makes it much easier to strain.
Optionally, you can keep the shrooms in there, too, without straining.
What Happens if My Honey Turns Solid?
If you find your honey turns solid, don’t worry. You can fix this by gently warming the jar in a double boiler or some hot water.
Place the sealed jar in a pot and fill it with water until it’s about an inch from the top of the jar.
Turn the stove on low and allow the water to warm up gently around the honey jar. You don’t want the water to boil, or it could damage the honey, crack the jar, or destroy the psilocybin. Be patient here and allow the water to heat up until it’s hot to the touch but not boiling.
After about 10 or 20 minutes at this temperature, your honey should be liquid once again.
How to Store Blue Honey
Keep your honey in a sealed jar in a cool, dark area — like a kitchen cabinet — to retain the potency.
Exposure to light and heat will gradually degrade the psilocybin. You can place the jar in your fridge, but keep in mind that honey will thicken in colder temperatures and make it a bit more challenging to scoop out.
How to Take Blue Honey
You can use your blue honey any way you would use honey regularly — scoop it straight out of the jar, spread it on some toast, stir it into tea. The possibilities are endless — almost. The only thing you should never do with your honey is heat it up.
Low heat is okay and sometimes necessary to get the honey to flow more like a liquid, but high heat will destroy the active ingredients. This means no baking or cooking.
Wrapping Up: Blue Honey and Alternatives
Blue honey is an easy way to preserve your magic mushrooms and make it easy to trip in the future when you’re ready. Honey is a natural preservative and sweetener, so it protects the psychedelic ingredients in magic mushrooms and makes it much easier and more enjoyable to consume psilocybin than just eating dried shrooms.
As long as you take careful measurements of the shrooms and the honey that you use to make your blue honey, you should end up with a mixture that is easy to store and gives you a nice dose of psilocybin when you need it.
