Penis Envy Uncut is a genetic offshoot of the Penis Envy strain. It gets the name “Uncut” because of the veils that cover the spore-producing gills that rarely open. Some say that it’s, in fact, more potent than the original strain — a claim supported by lab analysis.

Like the original, Penis Envy Uncut is a relatively easy strain to cultivate but results in lower yields due to the smaller size of the fruiting bodies of this mushroom. Although you get less of a harvest in weight, these shrooms are very dense and don’t tend to shrink much after drying. Their increased potency also adds to their efficiency — you don’t need much for a powerful hallucinogenic dose.

Penis Envy Uncut can easily produce shrooms with a total tryptamine content (psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin) of over 2%. That’s incredible when you consider that your average Psilocybe cubensis strain, such as Koh Samui or Golden Teacher produces between 0.5 and 0.9%.

Not only is Penis Envy Uncut exceptionally potent and intriguing to look at but also surprisingly easy to cultivate. Although we wouldn’t recommend this strain to the complete beginner, it can be grown with little in the way of equipment and knowledge.

History of Penis Envy Uncut

The history of the Penis Envy Uncut strain isn’t particularly clear. As with most hybridizations and genetic offshoots of the Penis Envy strain, the origins seem to have become lost over time or never existed in the first place due to the cultivator wanting to remain anonymous.

Some say the Penis Envy Uncut is a hybridization between Penis Envy and the PF-Strain. However, it seems more realistic that it’s an isolation of a mutation from the original Penis Envy strain.

Although the history of this Penis Envy variant is rather blurry, the original strain has a deep and intriguing history. The story of the Penis Envy strain has been hotly debated amongst the mushroom community for decades. However, the famous psychedelic journalist Hamilton Morris has shed some light on the strain, its origins, and its story.

In 2009, Hamilton published an article in Vice titled “A Nice, Thick, Uncut 12-inch Shroom”. In the article, he delved into the mysterious history of this potent strain.

He knew it wasn’t a naturally-occurring strain because of the size of the cap compared to the stem. With an almost identical width to the stem, the cap rarely opens and sporulates. This trait makes it maladaptive in a natural environment — meaning that this strain was created, not collected.

Hamilton was determined to track down the creator of this one-of-a-kind Psilocybe cubensis strain. He’d find himself walking into a world full of mystery and controversy surrounding the mushroom. Originally, Hamilton believed that an Amazon spore print made its way from the McKenna stock to a man named Steven Pollock.

It’s been widely believed for decades that Steven Pollock developed the Penis Envy strain from this stock. Apparently, the genetics were passed on to a man named Richard Guitierrez (Rich Gee) just before Pollock was mysteriously murdered. Rich then supposedly cloned the strain and began distributing its spores.

This all sounds very mysterious and intriguing, but it may not necessarily be the true chain of events.

Hamilton revisited the Penis Envy story in 2021 with an interview with Rich Gee himself — something Hamilton had wished to do for over ten years. Rich said that he received the original sample of Penis Envy from one of the co-authors of his book, Jules Stevens, who received the sample directly from McKenna.

Rich then used selective breeding to strengthen the strain and transform it into what it’s now most famous for — its phallic shape.

Whether this is entirely true, we don’t know. However, according to Hamilton, one supporting evidence was the discovery of one of Gee’s books from 1976. It was here that Hamilton saw the first picture of the Penis Envy strain, long before Pollock supposedly passed the sample onto Gee and was mysteriously murdered.

Potency & Psilocybin Content

Penis Envy Uncut is extremely potent — likely even more potent than the original Penis Envy strain.

One thing is for sure, this variant, and most of the Penis Envy series, are in a different league. A common saying goes, “A cube is a cube, except for Penis Envy.”

Penis Envy is so different from other cubes in looks and its insanely high psilocybin levels that it’s almost treated as an entirely different species.

Due to the popularity of Penis Envy Uncut and the other Penis Envy variants, there’s a lot of information on potency. Exact tryptamine percentages, psilocybin levels, and data from competitions are available.

Out of various samples submitted for testing to the Psilocybin Cup, the average potency of the Penis Envy Uncut strain was 1.36% psilocybin and 0.68% psilocin, for a total tryptamine concentraion of 2.04%. That’s significant when you consider the average Psilocybe cubensis mushroom contains somewhere between 0.5% and 0.9% total tryptamines.

Spores Lab tested a Penis Envy Uncut sample using the PSILO-Q Test Kit and found similar results. Their findings showed the tryptamine was over 2%. To put this into perspective, the average Psilocybe cubensis strain has a tryptamine level of between 0.6 and 0.8% — making Penis Envy Uncut extremely potent compared to the norm.

Not all samples tested so highly, however — some had tryptamine levels as low as 0.70%. So, how can the potency vary so drastically between samples?

Well, that comes down to the cultivation methods.

Penis Envy Uncut can produce exceptional results when grown in perfect conditions. However, the resulting shrooms can lack potency if grown in less than favorable conditions. Regardless, even the samples that didn’t do so well in the Psilocybin Cup were still highly potent compared to many other strains of cubensis.

Penis Envy Uncut Variations & Genetic Relatives

Penis Envy Uncut, being a genetic variant of the Penis Envy strain, has several unique variations and genetic relatives.

The Penis Envy strain has been cross cultivated with other Psilocybe cubensis strains to create new variants. Mutations through cultivation have been isolated to create shrooms with slightly different traits as well.

Here are some of Penis Envy Uncut’s close relatives and variations:

Penis Envy (Original PE)

Penis Envy is, of course, the original strain. Penis Envy Uncut and the other variations all stem from here — this is the shroom that started it all.

With its exceptional potency and “phallic-shaped” looks, this strain has gained much popularity. It’s now one of the most famous and popular strains of Psilocybe cubensis on the planet, and it’s highly regarded for its exceptional qualities by the entire mushroom community.

Penis Envy #6 (PE6)

Penis Envy #6 is a cross between Penis Envy and the Texas strain. This strain has similar growth patterns to Penis Envy but has a larger cap that looks more similar to Texas. It retains similar potency levels as PE and is relatively easy to grow, even for the beginner.

Albino Penis Envy (APE)

Albino Penis Envy is an isolated non-pigmented version of the original strain. The lack of pigmentation gives APE a ghostly white appearance. It’s definitely not as easy to grow as other strains in the Penis Envy series as it’s very prone to aborts. However, it’s a rewarding and intriguing strain for the more experienced cultivator.

Melmac (MELM)

Melmac is a mysterious strain with unclear origins. However, many people claim that it’s a genetic offshoot of the Penis Envy strain. It produces similar potency as PE, but it has a faster colonization speed.

Although less phallic-looking, Melmac has similar growth patterns and has a similar appearance to Penis Envy. However, the caps are more golden in color and larger than PE.

Where to Buy Penis Envy Uncut Spores

Like the original strain and its other variants and hybridizations, Penis Envy Uncut is an extremely popular shroom. This is great for those looking for spore samples because its genetics are available from various reputable vendors.

Penis Envy Uncut spores are available from online vendors in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the United Kingdom.

How to Grow Penis Envy Uncut Mushrooms

Like most of the Penis Envy series, Penis Envy Uncut is a surprisingly easy strain of Psilocybe cubensis to cultivate. Most psilocybin-containing mushrooms are pretty easy to grow, except for a few species that struggle outside of their natural environment.

With some basic knowledge and equipment, you’ll soon be well on your way to your first Penis Envy Uncut harvest. First, have a read through our guide on how to cultivate magic mushrooms. Here, you’ll learn about PF-Tek. This cultivation method is the easiest and most reliable way to grow magic mushrooms.

PF-Tek is a great cultivation method for beginners, and it can be used to successfully cultivate most strains of the Psilocybe cubensis species. It involves inoculating sterile jars with spores, allowing them to colonize with mycelium, and then producing fruits in a simple “fruiting chamber.”

The process from spores to harvest takes between three and six weeks, depending on the strain and how successful you produce multiple flushes.

Penis Envy Uncut will grow on all kinds of substrate, including BRF cakes (brown rice flour & vermiculite), rye grain, wild bird seed, and pasteurized manure. However, many cultivators report the best results when using either BRF or a combination of rye grain and a pH-balanced casing mixture.

Penis Envy Uncut is said to be a little less prone to aborts than the original strain, but they’re still possible through the first flush. If you can get through the first flush without issue, this problem often goes away.

As mentioned, this strain is surprisingly easy to grow. However, you do have to be extremely cautious when it comes to the sterilization process. If you want to see the best results from this strain, it’s important to be as clean as possible during the inoculation phase.

You should also give Penis Envy Uncut mycelium a couple of extra days once you see that it has fully colonized the jars. This will ensure the colony is strong and healthy before being transferred to the fruiting chamber.

Similar Strains (High-Potency Cubensis Strains)

Penis Envy Uncut is renowned for its exceptional potency. If you’re looking for highly-potent cubes, you really can’t go wrong with anything from the Penis Envy series. However, there are a few other highly potent strains out there.

If you’re in search of highly potent Psilocybe cubensis strains, check these out:

White Rabbit (WR)

White Rabbit is a super-potent strain of Psilocybe cubensis. It’s an albino strain that’s a hybridization of Moby Dick and Albino Penis Envy — both are famous for their exceptional potency. White Rabbit may begin to rival other highly-potent strains such as Tidal Wave and original Penis Envy.

WR is an excellent strain to cultivate. For a low-pigmented and highly potent cube, it’s incredibly easy to cultivate, although it’s not the best choice for the complete beginner.

Tidal Wave (TW)

Tidal Wave is an extremely potent strain of Psilocybe cubensis. It won the 2021 Oakland Hyphae Psilocybin Cup with a staggering 3.82% tryptamine content and a 2.26 psilocybin level.

This highly potent strain is a cross between Penis Envy and B+ — both strains praised for their strength. Tidal Wave produces short fat stems similar to PE but with larger golden caps like the B+ strain. It’s not a particularly easy strain to cultivate and isn’t recommended for beginners.

Brazilian (BRZ)

Brazilian is a strain regarded for its potency and the size of its fruiting bodies. In the wild, the mushrooms can grow upwards of 18 inches. In cultivation, the mushrooms are much smaller but can produce exceptional psilocybin levels and are still much more significant than your average cube.

This is an aggressive colonizer, and it’s resistant to contamination, making it excellent for beginner growers.

Strains vs. Species: What’s the Difference?

Penis Envy Uncut is part of the Penis Envy series of shrooms, which is part of the species Psilocybe cubensis.

Hundreds of different species of psychoactive mushrooms exist in nature. Different psychedelic mushrooms can be found across the globe, but many species are localized to certain environments and climates.

One psychedelic species that seems to grow almost everywhere is Psilocybe cubensis — the species that most people associate with the words “magic mushroom” because it’s the most commonly used. However, there are hundreds of different strains within this species that look extremely different from each other.

Different strains of the cubensis species have been discovered all over the world. Strains have been found growing in the Amazon, South East Asia, Europe, America, and Canada — the list doesn’t end there either.

Strains are genetic variations of a species. Two strains can look entirely different but still be part of the same species. You only have to look at the Psilocybe cubensis species to see this clearly. Golden Teachers look entirely different from Penis Envy shrooms. They also differ drastically in potency.

Strains occur naturally in the wilderness. Several different strains of this psychedelic mushroom species have been found across the globe. However, humans can also create them through cross-cultivation and genetic manipulation.

Penis Envy Uncut and all the variants within the Penis Envy series are strains created by human intervention. Penis Envy shrooms wouldn’t even be able to survive in the wild due to how difficult it is for the fruiting bodies to sporulate for reproduction.
