DOEF: Here’s What Little We Know
Belonging to the DOx subfamily of compounds, DOEF (2,5-Dimethoxy-4-(2-fluoroethyl)amphetamine) is a substituted amphetamine and has been sold online as a designer drug for its potent and long-lasting psychedelic properties.
Along with many of the more famous compounds in its subclass, like DOC and DOB, DOEF was synthesized by Alexander Shulgin after he began to create psychedelics based on mescaline-inspired compounds (phenethylamines).
As neither the scientific nor psychonaut communities have shown much interest in this compound, we simply don’t know much about DOEF and how it works (or how safe it is to use).
We can make educated assumptions about its pharmacology based on what we know about DOX compounds in general, but apart from a few remarks from Shulgin himself, DOEF is somewhat of a mystery.

Tripsitter Safe DOEF Guidelines
- 🐍 I understand why substituted amphetamines should be treated with respect
- ⚖️ I’m familiar with the laws for substituted amphetamines in my country & state
- 🍄 I’m familiar with and confident in the dose I’m taking
- 🧪 I’ve tested a sample of the substance I’m using with a drug-testing kit
- 💊 I’m not mixing any medications or other substances with DOEF
- 🏔 I’m in a safe & comfortable environment with people I trust
- 🐺 One of the members of my group is responsible and sober (AKA a trip sitter)
- ⏳ I have nothing important scheduled for after the trip
- 🧠 I’m in a sound & healthy state of mind
- ❤️ I don’t have any underlying health issues — don’t take DOEF if you have underlying heart, neurological, or psychiatric disorders
- 👭 Use the buddy system — butylone can remove your inhibition and allow you to make unsafe decisions, always stay with people you trust, and never go out alone
- 🌵 I understand the risk of dehydration — it’s easy to become dehydrated while on DOEF, so make sure you’re drinking a cup of water every hour while using DOEF
- 🦻 Protect your hearing — music can be intoxicating while on DOEF, so protect your hearing and bring ear protection before you go out to a club or concert
What Are The Effects of DOEF?
Let’s get into the general profile of DOX compounds before we start pointing out the particularities of DOEF.
DOx compounds are a class of psychedelic substances that belong to the phenethylamine family. The most well-known DOX compounds include 2C-B, 2C-E, and 2C-I, which are all structurally similar to mescaline, a naturally occurring psychedelic substance found in peyote cacti.
In simple terms, the subjective effect produced by DOX compounds can be described as strongly psychedelic with low to moderate stimulation, possibly hallucinogenic, and with varying capacity for euphoria and functionality (as in the ability to remain productive and in a coherent state of mind.
The effects of DOX compounds are also highly dose-sensitive. For instance, lower doses tend to bring on euphoria and psychedelia but may not trigger hallucinations.
Regrettably, DOEF is not a very popular compound within the psychonaut community, meaning that user-generated information about its effects profile is sorely lacking. Peer-reviewed information is even more scarce, as is usually the case when it comes to designer drugs. There are simply too many compounds for researchers to study.
Alexander Shulgin had this to say about the effects of DOEF:
Somewhere between the first and second hour, I grew into a world that was slightly unworldly. Why? That is hard to say, as there was no appreciable visual component. I just knew that the place I was in was not completely familiar, and it was not necessarily friendly. But it was fascinating, and the music around me was magical. Time was moving slowly. I had to drive across the bay at about ten hours into this, and I was comfortable. That evening I slept well, but my dreams were pointless.
(with 3.0 mg) It took almost three hours to complete the full activity. The first signs of effects were felt within a half hour, but from then on, the progress was slow and easy, without any discernible jumps. There was absolutely no body discomfort at all. Completely comfortable. There was a general humorousness about my state of mind, which is always a good sign.
[..] All systems intact, body, mind, and emotion. Gentle. Good for writing. No dark corners are apparent at all. For me, not highly visual. Would take it again, higher.
Although it’s important to take these comments with a grain of salt — they come only from one person, and it’s an individual who is highly experienced when it comes to psychedelics — we can still make some educated assumptions about what they might mean:
- As Shulgin mentions driving and talks about how DOEF is ‘gentle’ and ‘good for writing,’ it would appear that this compound is highly functional, meaning people can still retain the ability to do things.
- DOEF also appears to lack the potential for visual hallucinations.
- From Shulgin’s comments, it seems that DOEF is a remarkably ‘smooth’ compound. This means there is very little body load (physical side effects), and has a gentle come-up that causes minimal discomfort.
