How Much Should Good Kratom Cost? (And How to Not Get Ripped Off)
The price of kratom varies depending on the strain (some are more rare than others), the quantity (bulk buying is always better value), and the vendors themselves (some overprice to give the illusion of quality). Here’s what to watch out for and how much you should be paying for kratom.
Kratom costs don’t fluctuate much inside the US when buying online. Local shops tend to be more expensive regardless of where you are, but your location determines how high the cost will go. Kratom in LA will cost more than in Kansas — just like everything else.
However, the prices even out when buying online, making it much easier to know if you’re getting a good deal or not.
Let’s look at the average costs and how to save money.
Average Cost of Kratom
Kratom powder is the most common way to buy kratom. Plenty of other products are available, but these are more expensive due to the manufacturing processes.
Let’s look at the average cost of the most popular choices.
Kratom Powder
Kratom powder is usually sold by the gram — though some shops use ounces — with the price dropping as the weight increases. Note: the gram-to-ounce conversion is approximate and is what you’ll usually see when buying kratom — companies will use one or the other.
Size/Weight | High Quality Kratom | Medium Quality Kratom |
35 g (1 oz) | $10–$12 | $6–$8 |
56 g (2 oz) | $13–$16 | $10–$13 |
125 g (4 oz) | $20–$25 | $17–$20 |
250 g (8 oz) | $40–$60 | $25–$30 |
500 g (16 oz) | $100–$150 | $80–$100 |
1 Kilo (32 oz) | $150–$225 | $100–$140 |
Capsules
Capsules are more expensive than powder, but many people like not having to weigh their doses or mess with transporting powder. Plus, there’s no taste — a bonus. As with powder, the more you buy, the more you’ll save. Usually.
Count/Bottle Size | Average Price Range |
45-Count | $15–20 |
90-Count | $20–$28 |
250-Count | $55–$62 |
350-Count | $90–$100 |
700-Count | $162–$180 |
Extracts & Edibles
Not only are extracts quite pricey, but they’re also potent and shouldn’t be used daily. These come in many forms, from liquid shots to powder to pills and beyond.
Edibles are made from extracts and are also expensive since so much goes into their making. Vendors keep developing new products, and it seems there’s no limit. You can find kratom honey sticks, gummies, drinks, cookies, gum, and more.
Unfortunately, these prices are harder to average since the alkaloid content — usually mitragynine — determines the cost, and these vary quite a bit.
Gummies | Depending on alkaloid levels, gummies usually cost about $2-4 a piece. |
Shots | Liquid shots cost approximately $5-8 per serving. |
Tinctures | Many tinctures are full-spectrum and cost $20-32. |
Powder | You can expect to pay about $10 for 2 g (1 oz) of powder. Some companies are much higher, but the alkaloid content will be too. |
Tablets | I pulled up a few reputable vendors that sell tablets. I found one table for $5. Another company had a pack of ten with 45% mitragynine for $36; one had three tablets with 65% mitragynine for $20, and a third had one tablet with 85% mitragynine for $7. |
Tea Bags | Kratom tea bags can be hard to find, and you can make your own for far less cost. Premade teabags cost between $1.50–$3.00 |
What’s the Cheapest Kratom?
Trust me when I say you don’t want to go this route. Cheap kratom will lack potency at best; it could be dangerous at worst.
If you find absurdly cheap kratom, don’t assume you’ve lucked out. Chances are, corners were cut somewhere down the line, and it’s not worth risking your health.
Kratom can become moldy or carry bacteria, and some people will add other substances to it to make their kratom seem better than it is. All of these possibilities are dangerous and do happen. Remember, kratom is unregulated except in a few places, so it’s up to you to make sure the products are safe.
What’s the Most Expensive Kratom?
On the flip side, don’t assume expensive kratom is top-notch. There are many — and I mean many — vendors that have no business charging what they do. On the surface, they might have nice packaging and sound professional, but they reek of unsavory business practices underneath.
You know how the saying goes — if it sounds too good to be true….
How to Save Money On Kratom
You know quality kratom will cost you, but it doesn’t have to break the bank, and there are ways to save money.
1. Buy Kratom Online
The best way to save money is to buy online. As much as we love to support them, local shops have to mark up the prices to make money. Ultimately, you’re paying more for an inferior product since the kratom won’t be as fresh, and you can’t verify the quality through lab tests. Plus, the selection isn’t as great. You can find many more options online and in larger amounts, which is another way to save money.
2. Buy Larger Amounts (Bulk)
Most often, the price will be significantly cheaper if you buy in bulk. A kilo is your best option, but it’s not worth it if you can’t use it up before it goes bad.
Do the math and see how much kratom you go through in a month, then buy that amount, or a little more, and freeze it.
The downside is that you’re stuck with a strain until you run out.
3. Take Advantage of Sales
Most online vendors have sales and rewards programs. Holidays are ripe with specials, but vendors will sporadically drop prices just because. If you can time it right, load up on kratom when a sale hits. Otherwise, find a vendor that rewards you for being a repeat customer. If you’re lucky, you can do both.
4. Look for Free Shipping
Shipping costs can add up quickly, but many vendors offer free shipping if you spend over a certain amount — another bonus of buying in bulk.
Tips For Finding High-Quality Kratom
You’re not saving money if you buy low-quality kratom or it makes you sick. Here’s how to find kratom that will be safe and give you the most bang for your buck.
1. Look for Third-Party Testing
Hands down, this is the best way to find great kratom. Reputable vendors know this step is crucial — and will share the results with you.
It’s not enough to say they do it. Look for proof — ideally, the results are on the website or packaging, but sometimes you have to ask for it.
The American Kratom Association is another way to find good kratom. This non-profit organization certifies companies that meet specific criteria.
2. Check Out Customer Reviews
While you can find customer reviews on the company’s website, these aren’t always reliable — it’s too easy to get fake reviews or remove negative ones.
Even blog posts are often sponsored and somewhat biased. Reddit and other similar sites can be a reliable source for kratom vendor reviews as the people in the groups are customers simply sharing their experiences with the community.
3. Trust Your Gut
Some vendors stand out for their excellence, while others make a lasting impression of how shockingly bad they are. Spend an hour shopping around, and you’ll notice some that try hard to look legit but fall short. Sometimes, it’s in how things are worded. Other times, you’ll find inconsistencies. Or, you might simply get an “off” feeling. Don’t dismiss these flags. There are too many fantastic vendors out there — don’t waste your time on questionable ones.
FAQs: Kratom 101
Still have questions? Here’s some of the most common questions we get about kratom.
1. How do I keep kratom fresh?
Open packages of kratom can stay fresh for two or three months as long as it’s kept in an airtight container and in a cool place away from strong odors. You can freeze it for longer, but make sure it’s well-sealed.
2. What is kratom used for?
Kratom activates the opioid, serotonin, dopamine, and adrenergic systems, making it helpful for mood, pain, energy, sleep, focus, addiction withdrawal, and anxiety.
However, the strain and dosage determine how you feel. In general, use large doses (5-12 grams) of red strains for anxiety, sleep, and pain; use smaller doses (2-5 grams) of white strains for energy, mood, and focus; green strains fall in the middle and are great all-around.
3. How do I take kratom powder?
Kratom powder is the most popular product because of its price and versatility. Many people make tea with the powder — the taste isn’t great, but adding lemon or another tea makes it more tolerable.
You can also toss-and-wash it, which is simply putting the dose into your mouth and washing it down with a drink. This method is worse than the tea and not for the faint of heart.
Other options are parachuting it (wrapping the dose in toilet paper and swallowing it), adding it to food or drinks, or filling your own capsules.
