Shrooms are great and all, but they taste pretty grim. Measuring out a dose and chewing up a bunch of dried mushrooms isn’t exactly subtle, either.

Shroom gummies eliminate the foul taste while providing an accurate and inconspicuous way to dose. Magic mushroom gummies are becoming more popular and available to purchase online in some regions. However, they aren’t accessible to everyone.

Making magic mushroom gummies at home is easy if you know how — it also allows you to tailor the candies to your needs.

In this article, we’ll show you:

Magic Mushroom Gummies Recipe (Vegan)

Feel free to experiment with different flavors and colors! Make them you’re own.

Ingredient List:

  • Dried magic mushrooms
  • ½ cup of water + extra
  • 1 cup of fresh lemon juice (4 to 5 large lemons squeezed)
  • 1 tbsp of agar powder
  • 5 tbsp of granulated sugar
  • Flavoring (optional)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Equipment List:

  • Small saucepan
  • Glass jug or bowl
  • Spouted measuring jug
  • Coffee grinder or blender
  • Coffee filter
  • Funnel
  • Cheesecloth
  • Gummy mold (24 shapes or more for quantities above)
  • Thermometer

Step 1: Grind Your Mushrooms

First, pulverize your desired amount of dried magic mushrooms to a powder using a coffee grinder or food blender. The quantities above make 24 medium-sized gummies — this can be divided or multiplied depending on how many shrooms you use.

Step 2: Heat Up the Liquids

In a saucepan, combine one cup of fresh lemon juice with half a cup of water and gently heat. The aim here is not to boil the liquid but to bring it to a temperature just before it becomes a simmer.

Use a thermometer to check the temperature. It’s okay if this mixture gets too hot briefly, but as soon as you add the mushrooms, make sure the temperature never exceeds 70ºC (160ºF). Wait for the liquid to cool below this temperature before moving to the next step.

Step 3: Turn Off the Heat & Add the Shrooms

Next, turn off the heat and combine the powdered mushrooms with the liquid in the saucepan. Cover with a lid, and leave to soak for 30 to 60 minutes.

Step 4: Strain the Liquid

Once the time has passed, strain the liquid into a measuring jug by filtering through a cheesecloth and coffee filter placed in a funnel. You’ll need to squeeze the cheesecloth over the filter-lined funnel to get as much moisture out as possible.

Measure how much liquid extract is in the jug — you will need 1.5 cups in total for this recipe. Some of the liquid will be lost through absorption. To counter this, measure out and gently heat more water, then pour it over the mushroom powder through the cheesecloth and coffee filter.

Step 5: Combine the Agar With the Extraction

Pour the liquid into a clean saucepan on the stove and gently heat.

Note: Do not overheat the liquid; this will begin to degrade the psilocybin. Keep at or below 70ºC (160ºF).

Add one tablespoon of agar powder and stir continuously until completely combined. The resulting liquid should be smooth, not lumpy.

Step 6: Add the Sugar

While still on the heat, gradually combine the sugar, stirring regularly until it has completely dissolved.

Step 7: Mix in Flavorings and Colorings (Optional)

Once the sugar has dissolved, switch off the heat and add a drop of flavoring and coloring. This isn’t necessary, but it vastly improves the flavor and makes the gummies look more enticing.

Step 8: Fill the Gummy Mold

Take your gummy mold and gently pour or spoon the liquid into the shapes. Agar sets quite fast as it cools, so you’ll need to work quickly.

Step 9: Set the Gummies

Allow the liquid to cool at room temperature for 10 minutes, then place it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to set.

Step 10: Air-Dry the Gummies

Once set, gently push the gummies out of the mold onto a sheet of wax paper. At this stage, the gummies will be incredibly sticky. Although you can enjoy them like this, they require one final step if you wish to store them long-term.

Air drying the gummies will give them a crystallized, crunchy exterior while retaining the smooth gummy texture inside. To achieve this, place the gummies on a tray lined with greaseproof paper and store them in a cool, dry, dark place — a cupboard that doesn’t get opened regularly is perfect. It will take three to five days for the mushrooms to form a crystalized shell.

How to Accurately Measure Doses for Magic Mushroom Gummies

Different species of magic mushrooms and even different strains of Psilocybe cubensis produce varied levels of the active ingredients psilocybin and psilocin

If you know the rough strength of the mushrooms you’ve got and want to make gummies that contain psychedelic doses (not microdoses), you can gauge the doses by weight. For example, if you use 20 grams of dried shrooms to make 20 gummies, each gummy will have (approximately) 1 gram of raw shrooms per piece.

1. Find Out the Psilocybin Percentage

If you want to calculate dosage more accurately, you’ll need to test the psilocybin percentage of your mushrooms before turning them into gummies. There are two ways to do this.

A) Through a Lab

The first way to calculate the psilocybin levels of your shrooms is to send a sample off to a lab, such as ACS Laboratory, for testing. Within two to three weeks, you’ll receive a tryptamine report from the lab stating the psilocybin, psilocin, and other tryptamine levels in the mushrooms.

A lab is undoubtedly the best and most accurate way to gauge the potency of your mushrooms. However, it comes at a cost and may not be possible if you live outside of Canada or the United States.

B) With a Test Kit

The second way to calculate the psilocybin levels of your mushrooms is to use a home test kit. Psilocybin test kits such as the Miraculix QTest for Magic Mushrooms allow you to test for the presence of psilocybin and give a rough percentage of the compound present in the shrooms.

2. Work Out How Many Shrooms You’ll Need (In Grams)

Once you know the psilocybin percentage in your shrooms, you can work out the milligrams of psilocybin per gram of dried mushrooms. From here, you can determine how much (in weight) you need to make gummies of your desired potency.

To work out the milligrams of psilocybin, multiply the percentage figure from the test by 10. For example, a sample with 1.00% psilocybin would be 10 milligrams (per gram of dried mushroom).

You can then use this figure to set the dose of each gummy you make. For example, if you want to make 20 gummies, each with a 10-milligram potency, and your shrooms contain 1.00% psilocybin, you’ll need 20 grams of dried mushrooms.

If you want to make 20 five-milligram gummies with the same batch of shrooms, you’ll need 10 grams. For 20 microdose gummies at 2.5 milligrams, you’ll need five grams, and so on.

Now you know how to accurately work out how much weight in mushrooms you’ll need for your desired potency, let’s learn how to make magic gummies.

How to Store Magic Mushroom Gummies Properly

Your magic mushroom gummies will last up to one year if stored correctly. However, they’ll begin to lose potency after around three months.

Here are a few tips to increase their shelf life and reduce the rate of psilocybin decay:

  • Keep your gummies in a sterilized, dark glass jar
  • Store in a cool, dark cupboard
  • Avoid placing them in the fridge — this can cause them to sweat and become sticky
  • Make sure your hands are clean when you take gummies out
