The Mushroom Disco Ball: “Groovy Baby”

Let’s get straight into it with our top 4 mycology-inspired disco balls. 

1. Disco Therapy: The Original Mushroom Disco Ball

These funky mushroom disco balls by Sofiest Designs are all hand-made in the United States. 

They come in 4 different sizes (XS, S, M, and L) and two separate colors (traditional mirrored and pink mirrored). The smallest ball stands 5 inches tall, and the largest is 11 inches.

Sofiest Designs is a small family business operating out of San Diego, California. The company specializes in high-quality disco-inspired decor. 

They carry all shapes and sizes of disco balls — including cherries, boots, lips, and of course, our beloved mushroom. 

2. The Mojo Mushroom 

The Mojo Mushroom is also made by Sofiest Design — but this is the company’s most “premium” mushroom disco ball offering. 

These shrooms come in two sizes — small (8 inches tall) and large (10 inches tall). 

What makes these custom disco shrooms so special is that each piece is made to order, so you can choose from 6 different colors for both the mushroom cap and the stalk. You can mix and match whatever colors you want to perfectly match the vibe you’re going for in your room.

3. Demandsight Mushroom Disco Ball

This disco ball mushroom from Demandsight on Etsy closely resembles the Original Mushroom Disco ball from Sofiest Designs but with a few small style changes. 

The main difference with this mushroom disco ball is that it features larger mirrored squares and comes in 6 different sizes ranging from 4–10.5 inches tall. It only comes in one color, which is the standard grey disco mirror. 

4. AtriaLiving Wooden Disco Mushrooms

These disco shrooms by AtriaLiving are my personal favorites. While they’re not quite as glittery as the Original Mushroom Disco Ball by Sofiest Designs, the wooden stalks, unique cap design, and reflective disco mirrors make this a classy addition to any room. 

I especially like the morel-shaped mushroom disco ball from this vendor.

How to Make Your Own Mushroom Disco Ball

Making your own mushroom-shaped disco ball is easier than you might think. 

All you need are some small mirrored squares, a hot glue gun, and some styrofoam or tinfoil to provide the mushroom shape.

You can also use expanding foam to create the shape of the cap (see the video in step 3).

Step 1: Draw Your Design on Paper First

It’s going to be much easier to visualize the mushroom’s shape if you draw out the basic design on paper first. Make sure you measure the proportions on the paper and upscale depending on how big you want to make it. I recommend getting some paper that fits the true desired size of the mushroom rather than trying to upscale the image later.

Feel free to draw inspiration from any of the other mushroom disco balls on the list or draw your own. Check out our list of all magic mushroom species for inspiration on what kinds of mushroom shapes you can come up with.

I recommend trying to keep the design as minimal as possible, though. A lot of the details won’t transfer to the disco ball once you start gluing on the mirrors.

Step 2: Cut Out & Shape Your Foam

This is probably the hardest step of the whole process, but go slow and take your time to get it right. 

If you’re using styrofoam blocks, you might have to glue some of them together to create the right size for your mushroom. I recommend doing the cap and the stalk separately and then gluing them together at the end.

Start by cutting out the general shape of the mushroom first. Don’t focus too much on the smaller details yet; we just want to get the basic cap and stalk shape worked out first. 

Once this is done, you can slowly start trimming away at the edges until you get the exact shape you want and begin smoothing out all the edges with some rough sandpaper.

Step 3: Glue On Your Mirrored Squares

Starting from the very top, begin gluing each of your mirrored squares onto the mushroom. I recommend going for the smallest squares you can find — it will be much easier to fill in the contours of the rounded mushroom shape. 

Try and place each square as close together as possible, and feel free to cut away some of the edges on the first couple of squares using a sharp knife, as well as on any rounded sections to help them fit more snugly. This is optional, as you’ll see in the video below; you can also just place the squares together as best you can; it will still work perfectly fine if some squares have larger or smaller gaps between them.

Step 4: Allow Everything to Dry & Polish 

Hot glue should be fully dry within about an hour, but I like to leave everything sitting overnight so it’s nice and secure. Once everything is dry, you can use a general glass cleaner to polish up the mirrored squares.
