The Colorado mushroom strain is appreciated for its surprisingly large and vibrantly colored caps and above-average potency.

Despite the name of this mushroom, it’s unclear exactly where the original sample of this mushroom was collected.

The problem is that Colorado’s below-freezing temperatures aren’t conducive to a healthy Psilocybe cubensis. Some people claim to have found these mushrooms growing here in the summer, but without anybody stepping up to take responsibility for isolating this unique strain, the truth remains a mystery.

The Colorado Strain Potency & Psilocybin Content

The Colorado strain is known for being average in terms of potency. The psilocybin and psilocin levels average at about 0.56% and 0.02%, respectively — for an average tryptamine concentration of around 0.64%.

For reference, we consider the average range to fall somewhere between 0.5% and 0.9% total tryptamines.

Where to Buy Colorado Strain Spores

This strain is not easy to find. Only a few vendors in the US carry this strain, and it’s virtually non-existent in Europe, Australia, or South America.

How to Grow the Colorado Strain

Learning to cultivate your very own magic mushrooms is an invaluable skill if you’re interested in the effects (both short-term and long-term) of magic mushrooms. If you can crack it, you’ll have a nearly unlimited supply of cheap mushrooms to use however you like.

Growing magic mushrooms is easier than you might expect.

The main thing to consider is its growing medium, as it really appreciates a growing medium that can easily keep its heat.

Colorado Strain Grow Kit

The best option would likely be cow dung; it’s most likely a native growing medium, though rye grain works quite well too.

Considering its alleged origin is a particularly cold part of the world, you can expect the Colorado strain to have a strong resistance to cold. We’ve noticed only slight improvements here. One year, a window was left open in the winter to our editor’s grow room over the weekend while he was away. The temperatures outside hovered around -20℃ (-4℉), so the room got very cold.

While nothing was damaged, everything except the Colorado shrooms and (interestingly) some Koh Samui were stunted in their growth (slower growth differences, increased aborts, and lower yield overall).

Similar Strains

If you can’t find Colorado shrooms or want something with comparable potency and growth habits — check out some of these other excellent magic mushroom strains instead:

Acadian Coast

The Acadian Coast strain is another strain of American origin — this time from the subtropical region around Louisiana and Mississippi.

The potency of the Acadian Coast shrooms is very comparable to the Colorado strain — they’re stronger than we’d consider “average,” but not nearly as intense as titans like Penis Envy, Fuzzy Balls, or Tidal Wave.

Matias Romero

Matias Romero is another example of an above-average strain in terms of potency — this time originating from Mexico. The growth habits of this strain are quite different than the Colorado strain — they’re smaller, more numerous, and feature alterations in stem thickness. This strain also displays some unique colorations in the caps.

Thai Strain

This strain hails from Southeast Asia and bears similar growth habits to strains like Koh Samui or the Amazonian phenotypes.

The Thai strain‘s potency is slightly lower than that of the Colorado strain but maintains a similar “calming” effect profile.

Golden Teacher

Golden Teachers are one of the oldest and most reliable mushroom strains out there. Some experts believe the majority of modern magic mushroom strains on the market today are genetic isolations of the Golden Teacher mushroom.

Colorado strain bears a striking resemblance to this strain and shares similar potency.

The Colorado Strain FAQs

If you have any questions about the Colorado strain or magic mushrooms in general, feel free to reach out to us at hi@tripsitter.com.

1. What makes the Colorado strain of magic mushroom unique?

The Colorado strain is unique in its ability to produce multicolored caps. Colors can range from light brown or white to dark purple.

2. Is the Colorado strain more potent than other magic mushroom strains?

The Colorado strain has above-average potency. It’s stronger than strains such as Syzygy, Panama, or Escondido — but not as strong as Penis Envy, Tidal Wave, or Orrisa India.

3. What’s the best-growing medium for the Colorado strain?

We’ve had the best experience with this strain using rye grain indoors. It also works very well with manure for people who can culture their shrooms outdoors or in a greenhouse.

Strain vs. Species: What’s the Difference?

A strain is an example of genetic material with a noticeable, observable, and repeatable series of traits.

A species is a group of organisms that share the same base genetic makeup but exhibit different phenotypical characteristics.
