Amanita muscaria — known commonly as Fly Agaric — is a psychoactive mushroom species that doesn’t produce psilocybin, making it legal in most countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and most of Europe. 

You probably recognize this mushroom. Its image is famous worldwide, appearing in Alice and Wonderland books and films and the Super Mario games — it even has its own emoji 🍄.

The main psychoactive compound in A. Muscaria is muscimol. It’s an oneirogen and mild sedative that’s capable of inducing altered perception and dreamlike states of consciousness. The effects can be described as psychedelic, but they’re very different from those induced by psilocybin mushrooms. 

Amanita muscaria can’t be consumed raw like psilocybin mushrooms. They must be prepared through decarboxylation to ensure the toxic prodrug of muscimol (ibotenic acid) is fully converted. If these mushrooms aren’t prepared properly, they can cause adverse side effects such as stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and profuse sweating.

1. How Many Species of Magic Mushrooms Exist?

There are over 180 different species of mushrooms that produce psilocybin. 

These species come in an array of different shapes, sizes, and potencies and grow in different environments across the globe. Most belong to the genus Psilocybe, including the “Liberty Cap” (Psilocybe semilanceata), “Flying Saucers” (Psilocybe azurescens), “Wavy Caps” (Psilocybe cyanescens), and “Cubes” (Psilocybe cubensis). 

The most common species is Psilocybe cubensis. These mushrooms grow wild in several different regions across the globe. They’re also extremely easy to grow, making them a popular choice among commercial cultivators and amateur growers worldwide. 

Psilocybin-producing mushroom species also belong to other genera, such as Panaeolus, Inocybe, and Gymnopilus, although they’re less prevalent and often less potent than species in the Psilocybe genus. 

2. What’s the Strongest Type of Magic Mushroom?

The strongest species of psilocybin mushroom is Psilocybe azurescens. This shroom can produce three times the amount of psilocybin and psilocin than the average Psilocybe cubensis strain. 

Although tryptamine levels can vary from one specimen to another, the average Psilocybe azurescens mushroom produces around 1.78% psilocybin and 0.38% psilocin — 2.51% total tryptamines. 

The most potent strain of Psilocybe cubensis (the most prevalent magic mushroom species) is called Penis Envy. This strain gets its name from the phallic-shaped fruiting bodies it produces. 

Not only is the appearance of Penis Envy unique, but its potency is too. This strain is unlike any other P. cubensis mushroom — producing an average tryptamine content of 1.15% — 0.96% psilocybin and 0.15% psilocin. 

3. What’s the Difference Between Magic Mushrooms and Magic Truffles?

Magic mushrooms and magic truffles produce psilocybin in levels high enough to induce intense psychedelic experiences when ingested. They often grow as part of the same species but are remarkably different. 

Magic mushrooms grow above ground from the mycelium of psilocybin-producing fungi species such as Psilocybe cubensis. The mushroom’s primary function is to produce and disperse spores so the fungus can reproduce and spread. 

Magic truffles grow below ground from many of the same psilocybin-producing fungi that produce mushrooms. Although we call these below-ground growths “magic truffles,” they’re not reproductive bodies therefore aren’t strictly “truffles” in the traditional sense. Instead, they are “truffle-like growths” called sclerotia. 

Sclerotia are dense masses of mycelium that form to preserve the fungus through periods where fruiting (producing mushrooms) isn’t possible. 

These masses of mycelium can survive underground for several months until the right fruiting conditions are achieved. Sclerotia from magic mushroom species such as Psilocybe mexicana and Psilocybe tampanensis contain psilocybin, psilocin, and other tryptamines found in the mushrooms.
