Enigma Magic Mushrooms: The “Blob Mutation” Mushrooms

Although Enigma cubensis looks like something completely out of this world — they’re not a new species of mushrooms. It’s a mutation (or several) of the Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms.

The most distinctive feature of Enigma mutations is the blob-like clustering of the mycelial bodies that resemble a brain or, sometimes, longer, truffle-like forms. Unlike many other P. cubensis mushrooms, the Enigma blobs can take a month or more before they’re ready to harvest (rather than a few days, as with many other mushroom strains).

Another exciting feature of the Enigma is that it doesn’t produce spores, which means this is a single-generation variety of shrooms.

While this magic mushroom variety is known to produce potent psychoactive effects, even mycologists have difficulty categorizing mushroom strains and predicting their outcomes.

So although Enigma cubensis is said to produce powerful visual hallucinations and euphoria, the shroom’s growing conditions and the user’s body chemistry can significantly influence how powerful these mushrooms can be.

History Of The Enigma Shrooms

The enigma blob mutation is said to have first appeared in some magic mushroom strains in the early 1990s.

While the clustering forms may look cool, they can hurt the mushroom’s natural reproduction ability. The blob consumes the mushroom’s spores,  causing the fruiting body to become sterile.

This means the Enigma mushrooms are eternally stuck living as a single generation through lab cloning.

This genetic mutation was kept a secret by an underground mycological community for a long time. Because of the Enigma variant’s secrecy, there’s very little information about these Enigma magic mushrooms. Still, it is becoming a popular strain thanks to its striking appearance and intense high.

How Potent Are Enigma Mushrooms?

The Enigma mushrooms are above-average in terms of potency.

So far, 22 samples have been submitted to the Psilocybin Cup — a competition where mushroom growers can submit samples for HPLC testing. The psilocybin, psilocin, and various other psychoactive tryptamines are then measured and ranked.

Of these samples, the average potency for the Enigma mushroom was 0.76% psilocybin and 0.07% psilocin — for a total tryptamine concentration of 0.88% (measured in dried weight).

So far, the record for the strongest Enigma sample contained 1.67% total tryptamines. It was submitted by Little Tree in the Spring of 2021 competition.

Where To Buy Enigma Shroom Spores?

Enigma mushrooms have been around for quite a while, but it hasn’t been until recently that they’ve become more widely available.

For many years, the secret of their existence was kept to a small inner circle of growers. 

Even today, there’s some lore about selling Enigma mushrooms and liquid culture. It’s said that this is a mushroom that should only be gifted, or you could wind up with some nasty “myco ju-ju.”

But many online retailers don’t seem to be phased by the lore, as you can now buy Enigma magic mushrooms through retailers like Spores Lab, To Go Shrooms, and Psychedelia (Canada).

Enigma Mushroom Variations & Genetic Relatives

While the Enigma blob has been seen in other strains of P. cubensis mushrooms, the most popular mutation comes from Tidal Wave, which is a dependently potent magic mushroom strain. 

Tidal Wave itself is a hybrid of the B+ strain and Penis Envy mushroom. If you’re looking for mushrooms with similar effects, you can look at any of these parent strains. 

These strains are more accessible to source and easier to grow, plus you’ll find a lot more resources on these strains than the rare Enigma cubensis.

Penis Envy

Penis Envy is a famous magic mushroom strain known for its large, thick stems, bulbous caps, and high psilocybin content. These impressive specimens are often sought after by experienced growers, who appreciate their unique appearance, high yield, and potency.

While Penis Envy mushrooms may not be the easiest to grow, their size is impressive. In addition to their physical stature, these mushrooms are also known for their powerful psychedelic effects. Therefore, if you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, you may want to seek out some penis envy mushrooms.

Just be prepared for a bit of extra work in the grow room.

B+ Shrooms

B+ Shrooms isn’t as sought out as Penis Envy, but it’s much easier to grow for beginners. This strain is much more resistant to contamination and yields bountiful flushes of shrooms.

The mushroom caps are large and leave impressionable spores that you can use to create more batches of mushrooms.

B+ shrooms are more potent than your average p.cubensis strain, delivering higher doses of psilocybin with just a few grams that produce a gentle high, less prone to a bad mushroom trip and other adverse effects like nausea and vomiting.

Tidal Wave

The Tidal Wave strain is a genetic hybrid of crossing isolated monokaryotic cultures of Penis Envy and B+. In 2021, Tidal Wave gained the “Highest Potency Strain” title in the Psilocybin Cup hosted by Oakland Hyphae — more potent than its parent, Penis Envy.

The effects of Tidal Wave are similar to Penis Envy, delivering feel-good sensations and satisfying heavy visual hallucinations while maintaining a sense of grounding clarity — likely from the nature of B+.

Since 2021, Tidal Wave has become easier to source. 

You can find dried Tidal Wave shrooms and spores through most online shroom retailers. If you decide to grow these shrooms, you’ll need patience and experience, as they tend to be susceptible to even the slightest environmental contamination.

How To Grow Enigma Shrooms

Growing Enigma mushrooms is going to be a much more cost-effective option than purchasing dried mushrooms, but it’s not for the faint of heart.

This cubensis strain doesn’t produce spores, so the only way to start growing Enigma shrooms is if you can get a liquid culture or a sample of the living mycelium. 

Although the culture has become more widely available online, it’s still a rarer strain that can come with a higher price point.

Unlike growing other strains of p. cubensis like Penis Envy, you only get one flush out of growing Enigma cubensis. You’ll also need more time to allow it to grow to maturity before harvesting.

Growing Enigma mushrooms follow the same formula as growing any other cubensis strain. However, results aren’t always guaranteed. Be warned that this is a tricky strain to grow, but it does have satisfying results when you can nail down your process.

Like Penis Envy and Tidal Wave, the psilocybin content in Enigma strains can be very high. However, these traits often come at a cost — in this case, these varieties are much less resistant to contamination. If you’re looking for a more beginner-friendly option, Golden Teacher or B+ might be better options.

Whether you’re a complete newbie with a lot of ambition or a seasoned mushroom grower, using a mushroom growing kit is an excellent option because it covers many of your basics. All you need to do is sanitize your equipment and working space and follow the steps for inoculating your substrate.

Many growers found that mycelium colonization of Enigma is extremely fast when done in the right environment. You may need to circulate fresh air into your fruiting chambers to initiate the pins or the formation of the mushroom fruits.

Enigma strains will produce cap-less pins that eventually clump together and “erupt” to form the characteristic blob mutation. For most p.cubensis strains, after you see the pinheads form, you can expect to pick the fully matured mushrooms in a few days — not with this variety — Enigma magic mushroom growth is very slow in comparison. It can take 4–8 weeks until the fruiting bodies are ready to harvest.

Because of the long fruiting period and the high-humidity environment, it can be susceptible to contamination. One wrong move and you can contaminate your entire crop. That’s why keeping your fruiting chamber as sterile as possible is essential.

Here are a few tips to help you out when growing the Enigma strain:

1. Don’t open the fruiting chamber any more than necessary — When you open the chamber, you introduce potentially harmful contaminants to the mushrooms. So only open it when you need to.
2. Keep things clean — Wipe down the sides of the chamber and ensure there isn’t any stray dirt or debris floating around.
3. Sanitize your tools — Before using them in the chamber, ensure they’re properly sanitized. This includes things like knives, spoons, and thermometers.
4. Wear gloves —This will help to prevent the transfer of bacteria from your hands to the mushrooms.

As the weeks progress, the blobs will become more clustered and brain-shaped. They may also show some blue bruising and look a bit softer. This is the ideal time to harvest your Enigma magic mushrooms.

Use sterile flower trimmers and cut the mushroom from the base where it connects to the mycelium cake. Some parts may quickly come apart, so you can gently pull them off with your gloved hands and gently shake off any of the substrate residues.

Don’t be alarmed if your mushrooms have a darker blue appearance in some areas that aren’t caused by bruising. Your shrooms haven’t molded. This can happen from the mushrooms being in a higher CO2 environment and being clustered together. Mushrooms don’t use photosynthesis. They use cellular respiration (like humans) and release CO2 into the fruiting chambers, which can result in this bluish-gray appearance.

While keeping a large, brain-sized chunk of your Enigma mushrooms might be tempting, it’s best to break them up into smaller 2-3 inch chunks so that they dry faster and evenly. You can dry them out spread out on a paper towel in a cool, dry area, away from direct sunlight, for 24–48 hours until they’re bone dry and room temperature to touch.

You can store your mushrooms in a vacuum-sealed bag with food-grade desiccant gel packs to keep the mold at bay.

Unfortunately, this whole process is a one-and-done thing. You won’t get another flush from this grow, but you’ll have very interesting-looking mushrooms with potent effects.

Enigma Magic Mushroom Effects & Characteristics

How To Dose Enigma Shrooms

While the potency of Enigma may vary depending on the growing conditions, these are known to be reliably potent magic mushrooms.

You should dose cautiously as it may contain more psilocybin per gram than Golden Teacher. As a rule of thumb, start with a lighter dose. It’s much easier to start on the lower end of dosing and work your way up because there’s no going back when you’re on a mushroom trip.

Microdosing Enigma cubensis is a popular option.

You can grind the dried mushrooms into a powder and measure out 0.25–0.5 grams, then encapsulate the powder for easy use or just mix it into a beverage of your choice.

At higher doses (3 grams +), you may feel more energetic and experience warped balance, and visual hallucinations, with an intense body high.

The onset of effects can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour and last up to six hours. 

If you’ve never dosed before, here’s a general guide:

• 0.25 – 1 gram is a light recreational dose
• 1 – 2.5 grams is a medium recreational dose
• 3 – 5 grams is a full to strong recreational dose
• 5 grams + is a very spiritual dose
