Amanita gummies contain muscimol — a compound extracted from Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric) mushrooms. They’re an excellent legal alternative to psilocybin gummies made from real magic mushrooms (which are prohibited).

The effects of amanita gummies can be described as mildly psychedelic and lucid — but they’re rather different from traditional magic mushrooms.

In this article, we’ll look at the best Amanita muscaria gummies we’ve found so far

I’ll also explain the effects of amanita mushrooms, the differences between muscimol and psilocybin, and how to find reputable brands (there aren’t many).

Top 4 Amanita muscaria Gummies

We’ve tried and tested a lot of the Amanita muscaria gummies on the market right now, and have to say most are disappointing. Most use poor-quality extracts, synthetic muscimol, very low dosages, or fail to use any potentiating ingredients (more on this later).

It’s not all doom and gloom. There are a handful of brands manufacturing legitimate Amanita gummies that actually work.

Here are four of the best Amanita gummies we’ve tried so far:

1. Area 52 Magic Pluto Mushroom Gummies

Area 52 Magic Pluto Mushroom Gummies

The Magic Pluto gummies from Area 52 contain 10 mg of muscimol extracted from wild-harvested Amanita muscaria mushrooms as well as 10 mg of full-spectrum hemp extract and a host of potentiating ingredients. They are, hands down, the strongest amanita gummies we’ve tried yet.

What makes these gummies so effective is the ingenious blend of “mind-bending botanicals” that make up the Magic Pluto formula. The formula contains muscimol (from Amanita mushrooms), blue lotus flower, dream herb, ashwagandha, L-theanine, full-spectrum hemp extract, 5-HTP, and vitamin B6.

A lot of these gummies’ actual effects come from the hemp extract (which contains delta-9 THC) — but it’s more than just a weed edible. The effect is definitely trippy and has some sparkle to it that we attribute to the mushrooms.

The other ingredients work synergistically to enhance the dreamlike effects of muscimol (dream herb and blue lotus), reduce feelings of anxiety or paranoia (ashwagandha and L-theanine), and prevent hangover effects once the gummies wear off (5HTP and B vitamins).

2. MN Nice Ethnobotanicals Amanita Gummies (Best for Microdosing)

MN Nice Ethnobotanicals Amanita Gummies

The Amanita muscaria gummies from MN Nice Ethnobotanicals are clean, completely natural, and contain a genuine extract. The gummies are available in two options — 350 mg or 700 mg (per gummy). It’s important to note that this measurement isn’t “pure muscimol” but rather a measurement of the amount of A. muscaria used.

A 350 mg gummy is equivalent to 0.35 grams of dried Amanita muscaria and a 700 mg gummy is the same as 0.70 grams of dried A. muscaria. We estimate the muscimol contents in the 350 mg gummies to be in the range of 3 to 5 mg and the 700 mg gummies in the range of 5 to 10 mg.

The MN Nice Ethnobotanical Amanita muscaria gummies don’t contain any potentiating ingredients like the Area 52 Magic Pluto gummies. They’re also not particularly potent. However, they do contain a genuine extract from high-quality wild-harvested Amanita mushrooms — the raw ingredients are also sold on the website.

If you want a gummy to experiment with (psychoactive effects), these aren’t for you. However, if you’re interested in microding A. muscaria or want to use muscimol as a dream enhancer, they’re a good choice.

3. Koi MusciMind Amanita Gummies

Koi MusciMind Amanita Gummies

The Koi MusciMind gummies aren’t as potent as some other brands, but a well-formulated blend of ingredients elevates their effects. Each gummy contains 5 mg of muscimol extracted from wild-harvested Amanita muscaria mushrooms as well as lion’s mane, Mimosa hostilis bark, HCI-PEA, L-tryptophan, rhodiola extract, and vitamins B12 and D3.

Consuming one gummy in a good range for microdosing and dream enhancement, but to get the psychoactive effects, you’ll need to take 2–4.

These are a good option for people who want a relaxing Amanita gummy that’s perhaps not as intense as other gummies on the market. The low-potency extract and the well-formulated blend of nootropic ingredients provide the user with control over the experience.

4. Psyched Wellness Calm Tincture (Best Gummy Alternative)

Psyched Wellness Calm Tincture

“Calm” by Psyched Wellness isn’t an Amanita muscaria gummy, but it deserves a spot on this list.

The Psyched Wellness Calm tincture contains a high-quality Amanita muscaria extract obtained from wild-harvested mushrooms. If you want to experience the true effects of natural muscimol and don’t mind using psychedelics sublingually, this is an excellent alternative to gummies.

One serving (2 ml) contains 54 mg of Amanita muscaria. We estimate that each serving contains between 4 and 8 mg of pure muscimol.

Although the Calm tincture can be used to induce a psychoactive experience, it’s sold as a sleep aid and dream enhancer. Unless three or more servings are consumed, users are unlikely to experience any psychoactive effects during waking life.

If you’re looking for an all-natural Amanita muscaria extract without any additional ingredients, the Psyched Wellness Calm tincture is a great option.

What Are Amanita Gummies?

Amanita gummies contain an extract from the mushrooms “Amanita muscaria” — also known as Fly Agaric. Gummies provide a way to experience the effects of Amanita muscaria without having to endure the undesirable taste of the mushrooms or risk poisoning from ill-prepared mushrooms that contain traces of ibotenic acid.

Gummies also help preserve the active ingredients to lengthen the shelf-life. They act as a natural preservative for psychedelic ingredients.

The active component of Amanita muscaria is muscimol, but a range of other compounds in the mushroom likely potentiate its effects through an “entourage effect” similar to cannabis [1]. A good Amanita gummy contains a full-spectrum muscimol extract from wild-harvested mushrooms rather than muscimol isolate or synthetic muscimol. This includes small amounts of ibotenic acid — a compound generally thought of as toxic. In small amounts, ibotenic acid doesn’t appear to have any negative effects, and shrooms or shroom gummies that contain trace amounts are much stronger than pure muscimol.

High-quality Amanita gummies may also contain a variety of synergistic ingredients that enhance the dreamlike effects of the muscimol within them. The Area 52 Magic Pluto gummies are a good example of this — containing eight natural ingredients that work together to boost the mushroom’s mild psychoactive effects.

Amanita muscaria Effects

Amanita muscaria is a psychoactive mushroom species that induces a dreamlike sense of reality. Rather than inducing strong visual hallucinations like psilocybin mushrooms, A. muscaria induces a dreamlike sense of reality where objects appear larger or smaller than they are, and the sense of time warps.

This mushroom is a powerful dream enhancer. When the user drifts off to sleep, they’re likely to experience vivid, trippy, and bizarre dreams.

Here are the common psychoactive effects of Amanita muscaria:

  • Altered perception of reality
  • Dissociation
  • Distorted sense of size
  • Distorted sense of time
  • Dreamlike states of consciousness
  • Light hallucinations
  • Potential for confusion or disorientation
  • Relaxation
  • Sedation
  • Visual & trippy dreams

Potential Benefits of Amanita muscaria

There isn’t as much research into the potential health benefits of muscimol as there is for psilocybin. However, some anecdotal research suggests that it may help aid in certain physical and mental ailments.

Here are the potential benefits of muscimol from Amanita muscaria:

1. Promotes Sleep

Muscimol is a mild sedative that’s capable of inducing sleep at doses of 10 mg or more.

It’s believed that this effect is due to the compound’s interaction with the GABA-A receptors. A 1996 study that looked into muscimol’s influence on sleep regulation discovered that the compound is capable of inducing sleep in animal test subjects (rats) through its GABAergic action [2].

2. Pain Relief

Amanita muscaria may help aid in pain reduction. A 2014 study looking at the effectiveness of muscimol for people suffering from neuropathic pain discovered that the majority of the patients experienced “a significant decline in pain symptoms” [3].

Research into the potential pain-relieving qualities of muscimol is still ongoing. It’s not yet understood how this compound reduces pain or whether it’s a reliable long-term treatment option for treating chronic pain.

3. Creative Inspiration

Amanita muscaria — like other psychedelic mushrooms — is capable of inducing altered states of consciousness that can inspire creative thought processes.

When used responsibly, Amanita gummies may inspire creativity and help inspire the user. There are no scientific studies to back this up, but several people have found creative inspiration after a muscimol experience.

4. Mood Enhancement

The anxiolytic properties and the agnostic action of muscimol on the GABA-A receptors may effectively suppress activity in the central nervous system, leading to a reduction in anxiety and stress levels while improving overall mood [4].

The studies into muscimol’s effects on mood and mental well-being are still in the early stages, but the compound does show promise when used responsibly.

Is Amanita muscaria a Good Alternative to Magic Mushrooms?

Amanita muscaria makes a good legal alternative to psilocybin-containing mushrooms such as Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe semilanceata, which are illegal in most countries across the globe.

Purchasing Amanita muscaria gummies online is much safer than buying psilocybin gummies in a legal respect. These gummies are also much more relaxing and less likely to induce feelings of paranoia and anxiety.

Although both Amanita and Psilocybe mushrooms are both psychoactive, they’re remarkably different.

Amanita vs. Psilocybin Gummies: The Differences

Although you could consider Amanita muscaria a “magic mushroom,” the effects of muscimol gummies are remarkably different from psilocybin gummies made from mushroom species such as Psilocybe cubensis.

Amanita gummies induce sedative, oneirogenic (dreamlike effects), and altered perception. Psilocybin gummies are powerfully psychedelic — inducing vivid hallucinations, introspective thought patterns, and mystical experiences.

You could say that the effects of muscimol are milder and more relaxing than psilocybin. Amanita gummies are less likely to cause anxiety, paranoia, and distress than their more hallucinogenic counterparts.

Is Amanita muscaria Safe?

Regardless of its reputation, Amanita muscaria is generally considered safe to consume, provided it’s prepared correctly. Although not advisable, even if fresh mushrooms are consumed they’re unlikely to cause fatal effects. There hasn’t been a recorded death from A. muscaria in over 100 years according to the North American Mycological Association.

With that said, consuming fresh Amanita muscaria mushrooms isn’t enjoyable — often inducing diarrhea, vomiting, and severe gastrointestinal distress. They need to go through a process of decarboxylation to convert the toxic compound ibotenic acid into the less toxic psychoactive compound muscimol.

If fresh mushrooms are consumed, they can cause nausea, vomiting, severe stomach discomfort, and profuse sweating. These side effects can last anywhere from six to 12 hours until they subside.

Prepared Amanita muscaria mushrooms and gummies shouldn’t induce these negative side effects. However, consuming too much may lead to delirium, stomach discomfort, and, in some cases, nausea and vomiting as well.

Not All “Amanita” Gummies Are Equal: How to Spot a Scam

Not all “Amanita” gummies are created equally. Many of the gummies on the market are disappointing and don’t contain Amanita muscaria extract at all.

Amanita muscaria mushrooms are difficult to work with. They cannot be cultivated in an artificial environment. They must be harvested from nature in the fall months, making it difficult to source enough caps to make a potent enough muscimol extract for gummies.

Extracting muscimol from the mushrooms is also a difficult task. It’s hard to achieve successful results when decarboxylating and extracting muscimol from wild mushrooms. The results can be inconsistent, and it takes a lot of mushrooms to produce enough extract to meet market demands.

The difficulties associated with harvesting Amanita muscaria and extracting a reliable extract has led to many companies turning to alternative routes.

Most “Amanita” gummies on the market don’t contain muscimol from Amanita muscaria mushrooms at all. Instead, they contain synthetic muscimol, which is much less effective. Other, less ethical companies also utilize synthetic research chemicals to “boost” the psychoactive effects of their gummies. Although gummies that contain research chemicals like 4-AcO-DMT can induce a psychedelic experience, they can be unpredictable and dangerous.

It’s important to ensure a brand uses genuine Amanita muscaria extract rather than synthetic muscimol or another compound before purchasing and consuming their gummies.

Muscimol & Ibotenic Acid: The Active Ingredients in Amanita Mushrooms

How to Vet Amanita Gummy Manufactures (Red & Green Flags)

Finding high-quality Amanita gummies that contain muscimol from wild-harvested Amanita muscaria mushrooms is difficult. There are hundreds of gummies circulating the market that utilize synthetic muscimol or contain potentially harmful research chemicals.

Most Amanita gummies are more or less inactive — they’re made with low-quality synthetic muscimol or low-potency extracts without any potentiating ingredients that enhance the mushroom’s effects. Many gummies that do induce a psychedelic experience aren’t genuine either — containing psychoactive compounds that are unstable and pose psychological and physical health risks.

In this section, you’ll be learning how to identify a genuine Amanita gummy brand:

1. Assess Customer Reviews

The first step in identifying a legitimate legal shroom brand is assessing customer reviews. Take reviews left on the brand or vendor’s website with a pinch of salt. You’ll be able to find honest, first-hand reviews elsewhere online. Searching Google for reviews on the brand and heading over to Reddit will quickly expose the quality of a brand’s products.

You’ll find that companies selling low-quality, sketchy gummies will generate more conversation than companies selling high-quality gummies. Disgruntled customers tend to have more of a voice and take to places like Reddit to notify others of their poor experience.

Look for brands with positive reviews outside of their website. Avoid brands with a following of angry customers who feel as though they’ve been scammed, sold an inactive product, or have received a product that they believe contains synthetic compounds.

2. Read Product Descriptions

Read product descriptions and ingredient lists thoroughly before purchasing any Amanita muscaria gummies. Scammy brands will often use poorly written English and avoid stating the exact ingredients used in the gummies.

Make sure the description explicitly states that the gummies contain “Amanita muscaria extract” or “muscimol from wild-harvested Amanita mushrooms. Avoid brands that use phrases like “contains muscimol” or “contains mushrooms” and other vague descriptions.

Brands that avoid stating the contents of their gummies are likely using synthetic muscimol or other synthetic research chemicals rather than a genuine extract.

3. Assess Third-Party Laboratory Data

Any legitimate Amanita gummy brand will send their products off for laboratory testing by a third party. Most companies will display this data on their website if they have nothing to hide. Any brand that doesn’t display lab data or provide it upon request shouldn’t be trusted.

If a company does display third-party lab data, check its legitimacy by searching for the laboratory name online. You should also ensure that the muscimol percentage matches that of the advertised gummy dose and that no other compounds are present.

Check the dates on the data sheets, too. A “certificate of analysis,” or CoA, issued by a third-party laboratory should be no more than 12 months old.

4. Look at Payment Information

Check for payment options on the website. Amanita muscaria is legal in most countries, so any brand selling Amanita gummies should use tracked payment options at checkout. Any legitimate brand will offer normal checkout options with payment by debit, credit, and PayPal possible.

Avoid any company that only accepts wire transfers or cryptocurrency as payment — they are likely scams.

5. Check for a Satisfaction Guarantee

Any legitimate supplement brand that believes in its products will offer some kind of satisfaction guarantee. Look for a money-back guarantee or a returns policy that proves the company has faith in its gummies.

Avoid any company that explicitly states “no refunds” — this proves that they have no faith in the gummies they’re selling and expect customers to request their money back.

6. Speak to Customer Support

Speak to the company’s customer service team if you want to identify whether a brand is legitimate or not. Ask questions about the muscimol source, ingredients, or third-party lab data via email, instant chat, or phone.

Any legitimate company will respond swiftly with detailed answers to your questions. Avoid companies that don’t respond to customer queries or reply with vague, uninformative answers.

7. Look for Branded Packaging Online

One of the biggest red flags of any Amanita mushroom gummy brand is if their product packaging is available on Chinese wholesale websites such as DHgate and Alibaba. If the brand is using generic packaging that’s available for bulk orders, anyone can buy it and fill it with inactive gummies or gummies containing research chemicals.

If you find the same packaging used by a particular legal shroom brand, avoid purchasing — it’s impossible to know what the gummies contain.

Frequently Asked Questions: Amanita muscaria

Have a question about Amanita muscaria?

Read through the answers to some of the questions we’ve received below. If you’re still curious about something, feel free to send us an email at feedback@tripsitter.com.

1. How Many Species of Amanita Exist?

There are over 500 recognized species in the Amanita genus, but many in the genus are inedible and highly toxic. However, a small selection contains the psychoactive compound muscimol and its precursor ibotenic acid, meaning they can be prepared for consumption to induce psychedelic effects.

The most commonly used species is Amanita muscaria (Fly Agaric). Another species that’s considered more potent but relatively safe if prepared correctly is Amanita pantherina (Panther Cap).

Amanita species that contain muscimol include:

  • Amanita muscaria
  • Amanita pantherina
  • Amanita altipes
  • Amanita concentrica
  • Amanita flavopantherina
  • Amanita griseopantherina
  • Amanita pseudopantherina
  • Amanita rubrovolvata
  • Amanita subglobosa
  • Amanita sychnopyramis [5]

It’s important to note that although the species above do contain muscimol, their chemical profiles are not fully understood. This makes them risky, even if prepared through decarboxylation to convert any ibotenic acid to muscimol.

If you are planning on using Amanita mushrooms for their psychoactive effects, the safest species in terms of chemical profile and ease of identification is Amanita muscaria

2. What’s the Most Deadly Species of Amanita

The most deadly species of Amanita mushroom is considered to be Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the Death Cap mushroom. It gets its common name for good reason because it contains potent amatoxins that can cause severe liver and kidney damage from a single bite.

This mushroom species is responsible for the majority of mushroom poisoning deaths worldwide. Consuming even a small amount of the Death Cap mushroom can lead to serious health complications.

The symptoms of this mushroom start with nausea and vomiting, but worryingly, these symptoms disappear after a few hours, giving the consumer a false sense of security. After several hours, liver and kidney health begins to decline, eventually leading to organ failure and imminent death.

If you suspect you’ve been poisoned by any mushroom, especially from Amanita phalloides, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Early intervention and medical treatment are essential in improving survival chances after consuming this deadly mushroom species.

3. Can You Grow Amanita muscaria at Home?

In short, no. Amanita muscaria is a mycorrhizal mushroom species. This means it develops relationships with certain tree species, exchanging micronutrients for sugars created through photosynthesis. Without this relationship, it’s impossible for Amanita muscaria to fruit — making it impossible to cultivate in an artificial environment.

Some people have attempted to introduce the species to their yards and gardens with some success. However, most attempts are unsuccessful. Even in the “successful” cases, results are inconsistent, and the mushrooms decline after a season or two, ceasing fruiting entirely.

4. How Are Amanita muscaria Mushrooms Prepared for Consumption?

Amanita muscaria mushrooms must go through a process of decarboxylation before consumption to reduce the levels of the toxin ibotenic acid.

Decarboxylation is a process that involves steady heating through dehydration over several hours. When the mushrooms are heated over a long period, the ibotenic acid is converted into its less toxic, psychoactive metabolite, muscimol.

The dehydrated mushrooms may then be combined with alcohol and left for several days to extract the active compounds within.
